Mon 31 July '06 National show
- Impeachment. The Republicans used to send out lots of emails and go on talk shows saying that the Democrats would impeach President Bush if they won the election. Democrats were saying they would not impeach. Then they suddenly stopped some weeks ago, because they realise that a lot of Americans favour impeachment. Now an MSNBC online poll says 87% say President Bush should be impeached.
- The estate tax cut has been attached to the minimum wage bill as a poison pill. Clip of Representative Charlie Rangel on the subject. It passed the house. There is also pension reform under consideration. (
clip).
- Guest: Nancy Skinner, Democrat, running for Michigan’s 9th District (she was on Taking my Country Back earlier in the year). She and Thom used to be on IE America radio. She has no primary, but the republicans do.
- Bumper Music: The Way Life's Meant to Be, ELO.
- Ellen Ratner of Talk Radio News. President Bush was in Miami, saying that an increase in taxes means taking away money from entrepreneurs, calling for more free trade. He also said that the US is home to 5% of the world population so 95% of the world is potential customers. He said he'd try to revive the Doha trade talks. On immigration reform, he said there was a lot of document forging going on, and people sneaking into the US in 18-wheelers. He said that amnesty and deportation would not work, so the middle ground would be to pay a fine and learn English (i.e. buy citizenship cheap). He's given $700m for port security (less than one week for Iraq) and the Port of Miami received $25m. No news of protests, but people were not told in advance where he would be having dinner. Same sort of thing happened in the Soviet Union. Mr Boehner sent memo with words of day for August: keep America prosperous, secure the borders and enforce the law, strengthen national security, Spend Taxpayer Dollars Wisely, Bolster American Energy, Lower Gas Prices. What have republicans been doing since they got into power? FDA considering Over-the-Counter sale of Plan B 'Morning-After' contraceptive (not abortion) pill.
- Iraq update. New Gallop poll: 52% of Americans want all Americans out of Iraq in 12 months.
- Bumper Music: Rebuild America First, Merle Haggard (free video online).
- Article: Congressman Brags About Sabotaged Minimum Wage Bill: ‘You Have Seen Us Really Outfox You’. Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN).
- Article: Next troublesome missile test: Taiwan? by Simon Montlake .
- Article: More Than 60 Percent of U.S. in Drought.
- Article: Heatwave shuts down nuclear power plants .
- Guest: Alec Dubro, International Labor Communications Association, AFL-CIO. Chicago city council, living wage and big box stores. Unions in China.
- Guest: Mark Karlin, "Buzzflash". Best of the rest of the news segment. Bush and Congress show nearly record low ratings in CBS/NY Times poll. Democratic Party still democratic, whereas Republican Party run more like a kingdom. Authoritarianism. Wetiko. Native Indians had few choices: run, be slaughtered, or become like the enemy. Thom is concerned when people say Democrats should become like Republicans. Obrador in Mexico is demanding a full recount. The new Al Gore might lead such a stand if it happened again.
- Buzzflash news analysis: Bush to Armageddon: "Bring It On!".
- Article: Detainee Abuse Charges Feared: Shield Sought From '96 War Crimes Act by R. Jeffrey Smith.
- Article: Denmark 'happiest place on earth'.

Thom did the show from WTKG in Grand Rapids, MI.
- Quote for the day: "Posterity: you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it.". President John Quincy Adams.
- The first hour of this Friday was devoted, as usual, to "Brunch with Bernie" with Congressman Bernie Sanders, Independent of Vermont. The front page of the New York times today is a set up for the entire show; it shows why President Bush is least popular.
Deaths in Iraq, Palestine. Heat deaths in California - global warming. Current energy bill still not raising CAFE standards. Pharmaceuticals, buying drugs in Canada. Exxon profits. Moveon.org ads.
- Guest: Neal McCluskey, Cato Institute's Center for Educational Freedom, "The Folly of Federal Policy". Education one of the biggest issues not being talked about.
- Ellen Ratner of Talk Radio News. US economy slowing in 2nd quarter. Bush telling Blair that a call to Syria would fix it shows his ignorance. Condoleezza Rice is no diplomat, unlike James Baker or Kissinger (who was a war criminal in Thom's opinion). Bush American Idol photo op.
- There were several calls about education.
- Upcoming Event: "We the People. . . " Thom will be the master of ceremony at a fundraiser in Seattle for Jim McDermott featuring Bill Clinton. July 31 (Monday). (
clip).
- Guest: George Ure, urbansurvival.com. "This free daily financial news site is George Ure's effort to document the emerging Second Great Depression - the modern analog to the 1929 -1939 Great Depression. In case you haven't noticed Depression Two - the Greater Depression - has been underway in slow motion since the Internet dotcom bubble burst in March 2000. Since then, the reports of "recovery" ring hollow to the masses of unemployed Americans."
- Bumper Music: Not Ready to Make Nice, Dixie Chicks.
- Bumper Music: When the Ship Comes In, Bob Dylan.
- War on the middle class rant, history lesson.

She accepted a seat on the board five weeks after she pushed through a ruling at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission that would exempt Enron from regulation.".

"Lawrence B. Lindsey, President Bush's Chief Economic Advisor, received $50,000 last year from Enron for consulting. In 1999 and 2000, Lindsey attended meetings of Enron's economic advisory board. Mr. Lindsey later incorporated some of the ideas from those meetings into the Bush campaign's energy policy. Besides that connection, Lindsey's consulting firm had an Enron unit among its clients

He is going to beat the pants off Katherine Harris. She doesn't understand that it's ... improper to be chairman of a campaign and count the votes at the same time. This is not Russia and she is not Stalin."
- Activism alert: Media consolidation and deregulation. Read the following article: If the Paint Sticks, Sling It, Joel Bleifuss. The Swift Boat vets could get untruthful ads shown on TV, but when moveon.org tried to get some truthful ads with public record information shown, the RNC wrote and intimidated TV stations and several pulled them. Tell your member of congress and senators that you are concerned about the unholy alliance between big media and the Republicans and you want them to do something about it. This is not about one specific bill, but many that could impact this, for instance those related to the FCC. Toll free 1 888 355 3588.

- We need to get some adults into Washington D.D.
- Article: Mideast violence may raise odds of US attack: experts. "WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration's tacit support for Israeli military strikes on Lebanon may have increased the danger of militant retaliation against the United States and U.S. interests abroad, some experts say. U.S. and European authorities have stepped up vigilance against groups including Hizbollah, which intelligence experts say has cells in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Israel's attempt to cripple Hizbollah in Lebanon may have strengthened the Shi'ite organization by winning it fresh political support among moderate Arabs and Muslims, former officials and other experts said. ... 'Even al Qaeda itself may be ready with an attack, and they may choose to use it now,' said Michael Scheuer, a former CIA counterterrorism official who ran the agency's bin Laden unit." Terrorists want Republicans in power. Bush "I don't know where he is" clips (Osama bin Laden).
- Guest: Larry Scott: VA Watchdog. Article: Give 'Em a Little and Say it's a Lot. H.R. 3082, the Veterans Small Business and Memorial Affairs Act of 2006.
- Quote: "Now, I want to say something very important to you about this issue of morality in government. ... I think it is just as immoral for the Congress to enact special tax favors into law as it is for a tax official to connive in a crooked tax return. It is just as immoral to use the lawmaking power of: the Government to enrich the few at the expense of the many, as it is to steal money from the public treasury. That is stealing money from the public treasury. ... Legislation that favored the greed of monopoly and the trickery of Wall Street was a form of corruption that did the country four times as much harm as Teapot Dome ever did. ... I don't think the "black is white" campaign of the Republican Party is going to succeed. I think the voters are going to see through this holier-than-thou disguise that our Republican friends are putting on. All the tricks of Republican propaganda cannot make the people forget that the Democratic Party has been working for their welfare.". Harry Truman, March 29, 1952 "Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner" speech.
- Guest: David Bender, of the "Politically Direct" show. David facilitated Thom being able to give away 16 tickets for the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert in Seattle next Monday to listeners. Discussion about the "Freedom of speech" tour. Their most political tour. Songs from Neil Young's Living With War album. Everyone sings along to "Let's Impeach the President". The show gets you fired up to speak truth to power. We need to believe in the possibility that we can take back power. If you believe that, it's going to happen.
- Quote: "And where have the Republicans been in this fight for morality in Government? Do they come out and vote with us to keep the special interests from robbing the public? Not at all. Most of them are on the other side. It's the same thing when you come to the question of the conduct of Government officials. The Republicans make a great whoop and holier about the honesty of Federal employees, but they are usually the first to show up in a Government office asking for special favors for private interests, and in raising cain if they don't get them.". Harry Truman, March 29, 1952 "Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner" speech.
- Quote: "Private selfish interests are always trying to corrupt the Government in this way. Powerful financial groups are always trying to get favors for themselves.
Now, the Democratic administration has been fighting against these efforts to corrupt the powers of Government. We haven't always won, but we have never surrendered, and we never will.
for all these years, we have been fighting to use our natural resources for the benefit of the public, to develop our forests and our public oil reserves and our water power for the benefit of all, to raise the incomes of all our citizens, to protect the farmer and the worker against the power of monopoly.
And where have the Republicans been in this fight for morality in Government? Do they come out and vote with us to keep the special interests from robbing the public? Not at all. Most of them are on the other side.". Harry Truman, March 29, 1952 "Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner" speech..

- Quote for the day: "Restlessness and discontent are the first necessities of progress". Thomas Alva Edison.
- Guest: Senator Byron Dorgan, "Take This Job and Ship It: How Corporate Greed and Brain-Dead Politics Are Selling Out America". (
clip).
- Quote: "His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it." "Hitler As His Associates Know Him" from: A Psychological Analysis of Adolph Hitler: His Life and Legend, Walter C. Langer, Office of Strategic Services. Hitler spoke in Mein Kampf of "the principle, which is quite true in itself, that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility..."

- Parliamentary Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani said, "If we punish a person who killed an American soldier, who's considered an occupier, we also should punish the American soldier who killed an Iraqi who fought against occupation. - Guest: Alex Epstein, Ayn Rand Institute.
- Article: A Victory for Big Tobacco--and the Rule of Law, Alex Epstein.
- Alex Epstein's definition of objectivism: "objectivism is basically the idea that there is an objective, scientific, knowable reality; that the only way we can know it is by observation and reason; that we should all live for our own happiness by pursuing our rational self-interest; and the only proper social system is one of laissez-faire capitalism that leaves us all free to think and act on our own judgment and interact harmoniously".

- Gas price is over $3. Invasion of Iraq was to ensure a high price for oil.
- Quote: "Your fate will depend on your actions. Do not destroy oil wells.". George W. Bush.
- Quote: "As a matter of fact, in interviews in 1999 with respected journalist, and long time Bush family friend, Micky [David] Herskowitz, then Governor George Bush stated: ‘One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief. My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it. If I have a chance to invade….if I had that much capital, I’m not going to waste it. I’m going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I’m going to have a successful presidency'." Cindy Sheehan.
