A caller -- Sophia from Citrus Heights, CA -- called in about a PBS Special she saw before 9/11 about the building of the Twin Towers, in which it was stated that the core columns were packed with explosives to facilitate bringing down the building in the future when the building had reached the end of its lifespan. Sophia said she watched the special again to confirm what she thought she had heard, and did indeed hear correctly.
Can anyone confirm this? Can anyone suggest where to research the veracity of this claim?

I think Thom could get to the bottom of this easily by having an official of the NYCFD as a guest on the show. Thom should ask them if they normally recommend that builders pre-pack buildings with explosives during construction to facilitate demolition at some undetermined point in time.
I'm sure the fire inspector ENCOURAGES the storage of explosives in skyscrapers. I think if would be VERY ENTERTAINING radio for Thom to explore this topic with the NYC Fire Department.
Gosh darnit, our Thom would get to the bottom of it!
