I noted that Mike Malloy, of liberal hosts, best summarized the case of Benazir Bhutto. And that Tariq Ali, a learned commentator (and a Pakistani), reiterated the case on "Democracy Now!".
- she had a false populist veneer. Her family was old feudal money and she remained tied to and a champion of that class (as proof of this, she was Bushco's choice to put a false democratic face on the military rule of Musharraf. Bushco would not strongly advocate for an economic populist).
- she and her husband ("Mr. 10%") looted the public treasury of Pakistan to the tune of $1 bil.
- she has a reputation of encouraging democracy & women's rights, but she enabled and recognized the Taliban.
- circumstances of the organized assassination by police of her rival-legislator brother indicate government (Benazir) involvement.
And a guy wrote a letter to our daily paper, The Oregoninan, comparing Benazir Bhutto to Mahatma Gandhi! The hype runs high!
What I'm thinking actually was afoot here was that Bushco of course identified with the veneer of democracy, as long as that includes pilfering from the public treasury. And any means justified to secure that approach.
Only thing I can't figure out was why Bhutto agreed to Condi Rice's request that she return to Pak. I guess could be to clean up her rep in the history books.
