George W. Bush's latest mind-bending rationalizations about torturing detainees from the Iraq War and the War on Terror might have left Kafka and Orwell scratching their heads.
Bush's lawyers are now arguing that while a new law may bar cruel and inhuman treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, the detainees have no legal standing in U.S. courts to contest the abuse -- and thus there is no way they can stop it. Under these legal theories, the only person who can enforce this law is President Bush -- and he's one of the key people responsible for the illegal treatment in the first place.

Nice web site sunrise, run by alex jones a leading kook from the progressive left. Also found on alex jones web site:
Since 1873, the Global Elite Has Held Secret Meetings in the Ancient Redwood Forest of Northern California. Members of the so-called "Bohemian Club" include Former Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan.
The Bush Family Maintains a Strong Involvement. Each Year at Bohemian Grove, Members of This All-Male "Club" Don Red, Black and Silver Robes and Conduct an Occult Ritual Wherein They Worship a Giant Stone Owl, Sacrificing a Human Being in Effigy to What They Call the "Great Owl of Bohemia."
Jones’ documented the first ever hidden camera incursion into the Grove and the bizzare pagan ritual, the Cremation of Care, practiced by its members, all men, including both Presidents Bush, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Colin Powell, and Henry Kissenger to name but a few.
Yea, this guy sounds like someone you should follow keith!
Alex Jones also claims we are living in a police state, right now! Concentration camps have already been built.

The McCain amendment, prohibiting "cruel, inhuman, or degrading" treatment in all instances, is an accurate reflection of the true values of the military and American society. We should adhere to it strictly and in all cases. I know, from personal experience, that any leeway given will be used to maximum effect against detainees. No slope is more slippery, I learned in Iraq, than the one that leads to torture.

Kulak, Jones didn't write the piece, several sources report the same thing he posted. If a nut tells you there'll be sunrise tomorrow, are you gonna stay in bed because you know he's a nut, and who believes him?

Have you HEARD of Gitmo? How is that anything other than a concentration camp?
Have you ever BEEN to GTMO? The prison facilities are superior to most US prisons. In comparison to a real concentration camp (i.e. Dachau), this place is the Hilton.

The Bohemian Grove stuff is real, There really is a 30 foot tall owl statue there and they do actually perform a mock human sacrifice ritual there on midsummer's night eve. been doing it for 75 years.
I have the photos from the 1940s from the university photography archives (mostly yosemite and such) but the owl statue is real.

Yes, I have. As a civilian engineering contractor, I helped them install 4 wind turbines on John Paul Jones Hill to help supply electricity for the AC in the prison in an environmentally benign manner...I know whereof I speak...

In early 2005, four white wind turbines began operating John Paul Jones Hill, the base’s highest point, named after the Revolutionary War naval hero. The turbines, standing at 80 meters (262 feet) high, feature three-blade turbines. The four turbines are estimated to provide as much as a quarter of the base’s power generation during the high-wind months of late summer and fall; an appreciable fact given that Guantanamo Bay is completely self-sustaining, generating its own power and water without having to rely on Cuban municipal sources. In addition to generating power, the turbines have significantly cut down on emissions of greenhouse gases created through burning diesel fuel. Black clouds containing carbon dioxide can routinely be seen pouring from the diesel generators supplying power to the base’s energy grid. Each turbine is anchored in a giant block of concrete, through which 22 soil anchors are drilled into the mountain to a depth of 30 to 40 feet deep. These are then sealed with grout. The automated turbines are rated to withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour.

Camp, I've been thinking of "fairness and balance" with Loganthor.
I'm wondering what you think about this:
quote:
translation of Loganthor: A geography teacher errs when he introduces students to sources that bear a clear political agenda, notwithstanding the fact that he includes both sources from the Right (Cato, Heritage, New American Century, Brookings Institute) and from the Left (Guerilla News, Tom Paine, Indymedia, Freespeech, Zman). The facts and analysis in such diametrically opposed sources present skewed information that fails to be properly balanced by the introduction of The Wall Street Journal, PBS News Hour, BBC News, National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting System. (3/12/06 11:20 a.m. CST) This is so, because reading materials "standing on one end of a teeter totter" (3/13/06 10:06 a.m. cst) do not give a young high school student, who is not in a college level political science course (3/7/06 08:19), the same sort of balance the mainstream media would [list of sources from 3/12/06 5:43 p.m. cst].
According to Loganthor, sources from the Right (Cato, Heritage, New American Century, Brookings Institute) and from the Left (Guerilla News, Tom Paine, Indymedia, Freespeech, Zman) ... balanced by the introduction of The Wall Street Journal, PBS News Hour, BBC News, National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting System. (3/12/06 11:20 a.m. CST) should be replaced with ...

"Bennish teaches Accelerated World Geography, an honors class designed to prepare students for college. In his course syllabus, Bennish explains that his course will “look into the geographical—or spatial—relationships between human societies and cultures, the natural environment, and historical changes that have shaped the contemporary world."
In this context I have no problem with the rhetoric the teacher used. A similar thing happened in Pgh where a kid was "abused" for wearing a Denver shirt. That was also an honors class on diversity and the teacher was found to be consistent after a knee-jerk reaction.
I think "W" is mostly an idiot, but he was the better of a very weak field. The WOT is just, but constant questioning of it is also healthy.
I had a good laugh at you being called an enigma. Logan just hasn't read enough of your posts.

I don't see the aspect of the Bennish conversation I clipped in here off topic at all.
One of his syllabus ideas was to providing contrasting dogmatic positions (read the first quote from above), and Loganthor was taking the position that they were not "fair and balanced" and offered the mainstream media as a substitute.
In my opinion, the mainstream media operates much like a public relations firm, in some cases, simply delivering propaganda from the unnamed sources ... the policy makers who write the news.
Make sense?

In That, you are very much correct.
Kate you still have not responded to my review of the sources provided by Jay. If we are talking "Fair and Balanced".

According to this he is not doing so well.

I can agree here, but the firm they work for is not democrat, liberal, republican, or conservative. The media now reports directly to the shareholder. A globalized conglomerate of maximum efficiency. The MSM has degenerated into the National Enquirer circa 1974. Those of us with good long-term memories can clearly see the difference.
The MSM is sensationalist, but also anti-violence. They really struggle with this. Images from 911 have disappeared in the MSM, but Iraqi casualties still get top billing.
The IQ of the audience that the MSM targets has dropped precipitiously also. Broadcasting to the lowest common denominator.
You know a thread on the msm might be interesting.
I can hardly watch the friggin TV news anymore, but I still see enough to make me cringe and catch the weather.
I'm getting my blood up now.

Already asked and answered, but the point is comparing GTMO to a concentration camp is simple hyperbole...

You're right, of course. However, arguing GITMO is NOT a concentration camp beacause "In comparison to a real concentration camp (i.e. Dachau), this place is the Hilton." is plain stupid.
BTW> have you ever know anyone who was a prisoner in a concentration camp?

So what are the viable alternatives?
One side of the spectrum would be to do nothing. This would give brute force and violence the clear upper hand. The bully unchecked at all would rule.
