Seahawkfan: One reason I watch pro sports is to see the amazing abilities of the players.

The one-handed catch in the end zone, the slam dunk over 3 defenders, the triple play etc.
Uh huh, about the amazing abilities. My personal favorite is the center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, who handily "robs" the hitter of a home run from time to time, and does so with a leisurely ("I think I'm just playing in the back lot") kind of attitude. Of course, he had to work on sportsmanship and all that good stuff, when the Astros did the Cardinals in. I think the Astros managed, 'cos George Sr. and his bride were cheering them on ... Wink

Yep, they make it look so easy I occasionally think my 40+ body can do it.

Then I am humbled by my 12 year old.

Back to the couch for me.

I recall the shots of Bush Sr. and Bab's behind home plate. She looked more interested in the game than him. Big Grin

Yes, those pre-teens have quite a lot of muscle and attitude. It's Jim Edmonds (right?) on the St. Louis Cardinals center field. And who should we watch on the football field? The basketball court? Why?

I don't watch much baseball until the playoffs, too slow. I don't care for basketball players, it seems most of them are like Terrel Owens (me me me), so I don't watch that much until playoffs either.

That leaves football Big Grin and nascar Smiler

Seahawks 42, Eagles 0, woo hoo

No Indy cars or grandprix? [You wouldn't have to surrender your red state status] Wink

Naw, open wheels are interesting , but the competition doesn't seem as good.

Nascar comes to California 3 times a year and I always catch one race.

Wait, does that make Cali red or Nascar blue?

I think maybe the highest number of vegetarians per capita too. Indianapolis 500 track [in Speedway IN] has started grand prix. Having grown up with annual treks to the time trials [derby day too @Churchill Downs] I would like to see it. I met some Europeans enroute to a race earlier this year, and offered some words of wisdom 'Try the Silver Queen white corn on the cob, and a pork tenderloin sandwich' and of course the gasoline alley museum.

I thought Terrel Owens was a football player (?)

As for the me, me, me thing, I was reading up on how the Duke basketball coach ... coaches that out of his players, by not allowing the freshman to have cars on campus, forcing them to carpool with seniors, and team building happens in compact cars on the way to practice.

I enjoyed reading this story in the USA Today. It includes interviews from PETA, human psychologists, and school officials who let the live mascot thing go.
quote:
When A&M's football stadium was renovated in 1999, fans chipped in a few thousand dollars to erect a special scoreboard outside the stadium so sixformer mascots could "follow" the scores of games.

Never mind that the dogs are dead: The idea was to give their grave sites a scoreboard view.

Before the renovation, the scoreboard inside the stadium could be seen from their grave sites. (Miles Marks, president of the 12th Man Foundation, the A&M booster group, says the new scoreboard also serves fans who sit outside the stadium, drive by during a game or come late.)

The University of Wisconsin hasn't had a live badger since 1947 — about the time Bucky got loose and ran onto the football field during a game, says David Null, director of the school's archives.

"The team got a delay-of-game call while they tried to round it up and take care of it," Null says. "They're feisty little animals. I doubt they'll ever bring it back."

Funny how our need for a "sense of purpose" causes us to invent all kinds things that make our existent feel worth while.

but I think what is more "funny" is what one defines as a "sense of purpose".
