Hey wblakexx, If you can't find back our old wblakesx, I hope you pop back in from time to time. It nice to read someone who has a pulse! quote: Originally posted by wblakesx: if modal is meant in the musical sense, ie the relations of steps and half steps, plato wrote on their uses in The Repuplic. each has a different charm, but are capable of ranges of 'feeling'.
hi Kate
No E No p, I'd like to get a group together who start at the biological analysis.
Perhaps a folder for Socio Biology???
Hello, to you. I'm interested in your reference to Plato's Republic on this point, and I'll poke around to see what you're talking about! You got a response that read, "By multimodal I meant with visual, auditory and kinesthetic aspects, but there's no reason to limit it to those." from Sue. After I look at Plato, I'll know whether my guess is correct, that you see an important connection, a clear line where Plato made the V-A-K point, but did it with a little more poetry.

interesting that the above post went through.. ta again.
Hi Kate,
Plato had it that the Musical modes were native to certain areas, like Phrygia, and conjured up different emotions, some 'noble' other not. If one takes the present day Major scale ( it is artificial as the prime scale) and starts on the second note it is called the Dorian ( early wave of Greek invaders of Greece, Santana's "Oye Coma Va"), if one starts on the third note it is Phrygian ( used alot in Flamenco. Location: in modern Turkey ), fourth Lydian ( in modern Turkey ), fifth Mixolydian ( lots of The Band, rock, folk, folk-rock ) sixth Aeolian ( our minor and the name of a wind), seventh Locrian ( no idea where). These names are the modern 'church modes' from the middle ages where they were changed around from the ancient Greeks by monks. Even into the 20c some people wanted to destroy some musics for these kinds of effects. I hope you haven't taken too much time on The Republic, the relevant sections might be a bit difficult to find.
So umm, what great good are we going to do with the dosh and the 'privilige'???

Hi, wblakesx, I don't think writing here is much about the great good, even when we're in the free space. I figure people write for personal reasons. If someone else is on the same train, then maybe a connection develops. As for poking around in the Republic. Okay, I believe you, but it's worth dusting off a copy to have a look see. Do you remember where it is?

Hi wblakesx, You'll have to talk to management about any of those issues regarding the firewall. I know some of us try occassionally to get something rolling out here, don't know why it never seems to take. It is good to see someone with a pulse, that's why I was concerned.
