The people of Oregon have, in their wisdom, rejected the idea of a publicly owned power utility. They believe that privatized utilities yield the benefits of consumer "choice". They haven't figured out yet that the power company has lots of choices, but that the individual rate-payer has no choice at all.
My power supplier is the only power company that Enron was able to purchase as a part of it's profit strategy. PGE now touts its independance from Enron, but continues to extort the same high rates as before. I have no choice in this, other than to collect rain water and do my laundry down at the riverside, pounding it with rocks.
