Is it your birthday, Kate? If so 'happy birthday!' Birthdays are very special and if this is your birthday, may it be extra special for you.

Thanks, GG, but no, it's not my birthday.

It's just something I do, the day after Guy Fawkes Day/Night; I say happy birthday to the November 6 birthday gang.

Smiler

I disagree. What's so inherently "special" about a birthday? It's just a day for little kids to be the great big star of their own party. They should rename it "narcissism day".

The reason I am so harsh on birthdays is I mostly see little kids get extremely selfish and nasty, with lots of temper tantrums and anger. If that's what birthdays are all about, I consider it an antisocial event.

It reminds me of the recent trend in schools, where excessive praise and approval results in stunted and narcissistic children, while challenges and criticism results in self-discipline and academic achievement.

Of course, I always thought Mister Rogers was stupid. "You are very special" was not a slogan I thought produced healthy kids. That generation all grew up and had dumbbells installed in their noses, so what Mister Rogers pounded into their head really happened.

Glad you liked that. Some of what I say needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But when GG starts sounding like a feely-good liberal, someone needs to bring some gravity to the discussion Wink

I guess they're inherently special when they don't get celebrated, then it's the loss of the celebration that makes them larger than life. But the lack of celebration is tied to other things that are also larger than life, at least for some of the non-birthday-greetees.
