Well, it really depends on the context what's possible.
People develop trust over time. Strangers are open and honest on the surface, but don't get into the details of each other's lives, not immediately. Sometimes, though, people become fast friends in an airport waiting room, or seated next to someone on a plane, and we all understood Forrest Gump's life story, in the context of lots of conversations at a bus stop, but those are fleeting scenarios.
On the internet, anything you say is potentially viewable by someone you don't trust, to use for purposes you didn't intend. That's especially true on an open message board. Some in positions of power have declined to use the internet to communicate for that very reason. Others have jumped into it with both feet.
Given those variables, sometimes, all that's possible is what's on the surface. And what's on the surface is an honest response to the dangers of being too open.
